Gary
Catona has taught many of the most successful singers and entertainers
in the world, including stars such as Whitney Houston, Sade,
Andrea Bocelli, Usher, Seal, Shakira, Babyface, Lenny Kravitz,
Brian Wilson, Johnny Mathis, Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, Annie
Lennox, Kevin Spacey, Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie, Robben Ford,
Shirley Mac Laine, and Liza Minnelli.
As
a gifted teenage vocalist from Philadelphia, Catona dreamed
of becoming an opera singer. His inspiration was another native
from Philadelphia—the late, great Mario Lanza, who had
died in 1959.
Catona
began studying singing in earnest, but ultimately was dissatisfied
with the results. After working with 14 different singing coaches,
he decided to discontinue formal voice study and to discover
on his own how to improve his voice. He began doing research
into the anatomy of the voice and into exercise physiology,
and discovered the importance of voice muscles to singing. He
also took note of the ideas of another of his idols—legendary
tenor, Enrico Caruso, who, in his writings about vocal technique,
referred to the muscles of the throat and recommended that singers
“sing well back in the throat”—ideas that
conflicted radically with what his teachers had taught. In fact,
all his teachers taught to sing forward “in the mask”
and to avoid the throat all together.
"I
concluded that behind a great voice is a muscular voice,"
said Catona, "and that vocal athleticism should be the
goal of vocal study. I then began experimenting with exercise
strategies and finally found one ideally suited to the voice
muscles—isokinetics; this requires placing maximum resistance
to muscles when putting them through their full range of uniform
motion.”
Based
on his new understanding about the importance of voice muscles
and exercise to vocal development, Catona put the whole process
of "voice building" on a systematic basis. In Catona's
words, "I developed and refined a voice building system
that is both old and new.
It
derives, in part, from an old Italian tradition of opera singing,
as well as from modern ideas of exercise physiology. I have
refined my voice building system to the point that this process
can build power, range, richness into anyone's singing voice—men
and women, boys and girls—quickly and dramatically."
Catona's
groundbreaking “voice building system” has been
the subject of numerous articles worldwide, and his work with
some of the world's most famous singers was featured on Hollywood's
top show for entertainment — "Entertainment Tonight."
His goal to make his voice building system available to the
general public and in so doing to help lovers of the human voice
rediscover its fully realized power and glory.
Catona
holds a master’s degree in philosophy from Pennsylvania
State University and works out of Los Angeles, California.
